Materials and texts
Newfoundland uses a text book called Acti-vie when teaching Core French. It has many materials available for for an efficient way for teachers to teach and for students to learn the french language. (Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education, 2002).
Acti-Vie is a core French program designed to meet the national curriculum outcomes. There are three levels and each contains eight themes built around experiential goals that usually relate to students lives. (Nelson, n.d.). Acti-vie is flexible, multidimensional, communicative, experiential and used nationally. It has two main goals. It is to help teachers with their task of teaching french by using communicative/experiential approach (Bernard, n.d.). This provides tools to help the students through the language learning process. The students can develop their receptive and productive skills in a second language (Bernard, n.d.). Also, Acti-Vie aims to educate the student by building knowledge by experience. The students learn about real subjects that help support their general education. The students’ interest level will increase as they learn more about the language (Bernard, n.d.). The goal of each unit is to encourage our students to want to communicate in french (Bernard, n.d.). This helps students learn language that can be used in real life situations and also helps them discover interesting cultural realities. Acti-Vie expands students’ experience and contributes to their general education. (Bernard, n.d.) Some other resources used are for example: Le Calendrier, Les histoires de Napoléon, Collection Bandes Dessinées, Collection Millefeuilles, Carnaval de Québec, Allons-y!... and many other great resources that are found in the Newfoundland and Labrador Core French Curriculum Guide.
