inclusion and differentiation
Teachers should always assess the students' abilities and make themselves aware of their differences so that they can include all students (Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education, 2002). Support that teachers can give help to students with disabilities and who are on a special program. They can also turn to special education teacher for guidance (Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education, 2002). It is up to the teacher to choose a individualized support service plan to help a student based their needs and it does not matter the steps the teacher takes to modify the program, it is the goal of the teacher for the student to always reach their potential (Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education, 2002).
There are many services made available to gifted and talented students. For example: independent guided study, specialist teachers, flexible groupings which provide opportunities for learning with intellectual peers, mentorships, and consultative services to assist teachers in expanding experiences in the regular classroom accelerating. (Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education, 2013). There are students who are gifted in the language areas of reading, writing, and communication skills and they will demonstrate competencies in some areas. For example: awareness of language, communication skills – tends to write and talk with creative flair exceptional for their age), reasoning and arguing and literacy (Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education, 2013). If a student is gifted in french, they can have differentiated instruction. They can use poetry to help explore the quality of words. Without the constrictions of a rhyming scheme, free verse allows a student to focus on imagery and to experiment with various writing styles. They can have a study of the structure of words which helps with advanced vocabulary. The students can do journal writing which allows them to write, rephrase, and reflect on their thoughts (Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education, 2013).
