Listening, speaking, reading and writing
Listening, speaking, reading and writing are the four skills that are used in the Newfoundland curriculum Core French Curriculum guide (Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education, 2002). It begins in grade four. The students are introduced to French by listening and speaking, written communication is touched on but it learned more in depth later on (Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education, 2002).
Grade four students develop both oral and written communication through the re-teaching of introductory concepts that they learned in grade four (Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education, 2002). Grade six introduces them to a continued consolidation and growth of student knowledge. They also develop skills as students that prepare for the transition into the intermediate program.
While in elementary, 80% of their program is devoted to oral communication and then only 20% to written (Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education, 2002). These skills then merge together to form the goal that government wants of Core French. The students should then be able to think, learn and communicate effectively (Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education, 2002).
